Happy birthday to artist Nick Cave, who was born on this day in 1959 in Fulton, Missouri. Throughout his career, Cave has used the body—or fragments of the body—to address issues related to identity politics and social justice. In this sculpture, “Cutter and Braid,” the use of synthetic hair alludes to an absent body. Haunting and poetic, this work is currently on view alongside a number of other sculptures by the artist in “Ghosts and Fragments.“
