misplaced-childhood:

another day, another Amazon Prime Video deep dive. i’d never heard of this film before but apparently it caused quite the controversy back in 1975 and only received a limited release. Rod Steiger plays an Irish father who seeks revenge on Queen Elizabeth and Parliament after his wife and daughter are accidentally shot by a British soldier during a Belfast riot.  given the subject matter, i’m actually surprised the film was made at all during the height of the Troubles, but it’s a surprisingly even handed. take away the odd “Irish” accents of Steiger and Remick and you have a pretty decent 70′s UK political thriller, cultural subtext and all. also fun to see a young Patrick Stewart in a small part as an IRA thug
