Gene Day’s cover art for the 1979 fantasy flight game, “Space Opera.” It was a broad ruleset that could cover space marines, bug aliens, robots, Lensmen, science officers, and doctors. There were tons of references to the two best frames of reference for space opera at the time: the Lensmen novels, and a movie that came out a year before, Star Wars.
